THERAPY IN MOTION

StillWater Kids

Founded in October 2023 in the town of Still Bay, Project Stillwater is a non-profit initiative dedicated to improving the lives of underprivileged children aged 7-11 in Melkhoutfontein (outside of Still Bay), Western Cape, South Africa.

Our mission is to provide a holistic, year-long intervention that combines supervised sporting activities with regular mental-health interventions, to help children heal, grow, and thrive. The programme is designed to combat substance-abuse, crime and other negative behaviours and poor decision making by addressing the effects of trauma and learned behaviour.

Program Structure:

Project Stillwater runs for 12 consecutive months, enrolling up to 10 children per group. Activities are divided into two main components: monthly supervised sports events and ongoing mental wellness interventions. The staff includes trained coaches, licensed therapists, program coordinators, and volunteers.

Sporting Activities:

Learning and doing sport gives children a goal to strive for , instilling a sense of achievement. It also gets them out in nature and offers them the freedom to truly be children. Paddling, swimming, playing, winter beach sport, trail-walking, snorkelling.

Mental Wellness Interventions:

Children receive and participate in:
- TF- CBT (Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy)
- TRE (Tension &Trauma Release Exercises)
- Equine Therapy (Horses)
- Remedies For Anxiety, ADD / ADHD
- Personal Hygiene Classes
- Talks & Input From Motivational Speakers

Target Population:

The program serves children aged 7-11 living in Melkhoutfontein who are identified as underprivileged due to socio-economic factors, family instability, or exposure to trauma. Selection is based on referrals from schools, social workers, and locals from the community.

We prioritize children who have experienced domestic violence, loss, neglect, sexual abuse, rape, physical and mental abuse, or parental substance abuse. The demographic is diverse, reflecting the local population, with an emphasis on inclusivity and equal opportunity for boys and girls.
